The past few weeks, the internet has been rife with announcement that a jailbreak has already been found for Apple’s newest iPod, the second generation Touch. For fans this has been a long time coming and meant that they can finally enjoy a jailbroken iPod Touch with all the fun things you can do with it.

However, the current jailbreak method is still a bit dodgy and requires you to jump through a few hoops. It’s definitely not a one-click solution yet. Another problem with the current jailbreak solution is that every time you boot up your iPod, it will be stuck with a white screen and you need to connect it to your computer and run a command before it will properly boot. This is termed a tethered jailbreak and meant that you have to be tethered to the computer when you are restarting the iPod.

This may be a problem, as when applications crash or when you run out of batteries on a long trip and don’t have access to a computer, you are basically screwed. For me, I always keep my iPod turned on and rarely am without access to a PC, so this is good enough for me to get started on jailbreaking.

To get started, point your browser to this site which provides a nice little program to automate the process. But you must be at least a few rungs higher than a total computer n00b to perform this successfully as it involves setting your iPod into DFU mode.

The jailbreak (termed redsn0w) is already running successfully on my iPod and it works great! But be sure to backup your iPod and do a restore after jailbreaking to retain all your applications. Data, however, will be lost, like things in the Calendar, Notes, etc. I always keep my Calendar synced to Google Calendar so this is not a problem for me, and I have emailed all my Notes to Gmail to store for retrieval after jailbreaking.

I wish you good luck in jailbreaking your Gen 2 iPod Touch!
